From childhood's hour I have not been (why is he comparing to others) As others were-- I have not seen (maybe was blind) As others saw-- I could not bring (couldn't do anything about it) My passions from a common spring-- (Why dream a common spring) From the same source I have not taken My sorrow-- I could not awaken My heart to joy at the same tone-- And all I loved-- I loved alone-- (maybe loved himself) Then-- in my childhood--in the dawn (childhood coming to an end) Of a most stormy life-- was drawn From every depth of good and ill The mystery which binds me still-- (Is it bugging the speaker) From the torrent, or the fountain-- From the red cliff of the mountain-- From the sun that around me rolled In its autumn tint of gold-- From the lightning in the sky As it passed me flying by-- From the thunder, and the storm-- And the cloud that took the form (Where the rest of Heaven was blue) Of a demon in my view. (Why would the speaker bring a subject of a demon?)
Rating:**** Analysis:
In this poem, "Alone", the overall mood in this poem is helpless because the speaker doesn't get to experience the things that others did, in which the speaker may be blind somehow. The general idea that I got from this poem is that never take advantage of the things God gave you. There are some people who take advantage of those things, in which they don't appreciate it. So, people should not take advantage of those things.
One thing that people should not take advantage of is the eyesight. God gave eyes to see the surroundings that are around you. In fact, this speaker can't see just like the others who can see. In the poem, the line stated, "I have not been/As others were-- I have not seen/As others saw." This line that the speaker had stated was true, since the speaker couldn't see anything that is around him/her. It's hard to think about it, seeing a dark world, without any light entering. If I was the same position as the speaker, I will freak out about it.
Another thing that people should not take advantage of is loving others. The people should always lobe their families, but the speaker did not. The diction of this line, was stated, "My heart to joy at the same tone--/And all I loved-- I loved alone--." The diction of this poem was very clear and it fitted perfectly with the poem, in which the speaker might had loved himself than anyone around him/her. And it may be difficult for the speaker to live in that manner. This all connects to the general idea, never take advantage of everything.
